How to disguise your voice — and actually stay anonymous

The free, quick option is a pitch slider — drag your voice up toward 'chipmunk' or down toward 'demon' and call it disguised. It isn't. Pitch is only one part of what makes a voice recognizable; your cadence, accent, breath pattern and turns of phrase all ride along unchanged underneath the pitch shift. Anyone who's heard you talk for more than a few minutes can usually hear through it, and forensic-level voice matching doesn't need pitch at all.

From weakest to strongest, for staying unrecognizable to someone who knows how you sound:

1. Change how you speak. Talk slower or faster, lower your register, drop your usual filler words. Free, but hard to hold for more than a minute, and your accent and rhythm leak through.
2. Physical tricks. Speaking through a cloth, cupping a hand over the mic or pinching your nose. Muffles you rather than disguising you, and sounds bad on a recording.
3. Pitch shifting. The classic slider. Easy to produce, easy to hear through — see below.
4. Pitch plus formant shifting. Moving the formants (the resonance of your throat and mouth) along with the pitch makes you sound like a differently sized person instead of a sped-up tape. Noticeably better, still keeps your delivery.
5. Robotic or heavy distortion. Genuinely unrecognizable, but tiring to listen to — fine for a sound bite, not a video.
6. Text-to-speech instead of your voice. Removes your voice completely, but also your timing and emotion; viewers can tell.
7. An AI voice changer. Re-synthesizes what you said in a different voice, so the timbre changes wholesale while your delivery stays natural. The best balance of anonymity and listenability.
